Saturday 11th June

Although the weather was not forecast to be good, we decided to go to the town of Trakai mainly to visit Trakai Island Castle. Our guide from Friday was available and he drove us to the village, giving a bit of commentary as we went.

Extracts from the local guide book gave us some amusement as it included “Several ludicrously cheap buses depart from Vilnius' station” and “trains take about 40 minutes to make the journey and cost buttons.”

The tower does what towers do – towers above us!

After we had been dropped back at the hotel, we went to the bar over the road from the hotel to get some lunch. Here we managed to cause plenty of confusion with the waitress who we initially thought spoke good English. After our first round of beers, we pointed to the empty glasses and said “Five more beers please.” In response, she bought the bill for 5 of us, but no extra drinks. We thought maybe she wanted to give us one bill before serving us more. We asked her again for five more beers. She responed as if the penny had dropped and took the bill back She returned with it split into five separate bills. “No” we said, we would like more drinks.

Eventually the penny did drop and we got our 5 beers and the girls moved on to trying to order some sweets; some with nuts and cream, some with chocolate, some with nuts and no cream, etc. No chance!

In the evening we went back to restaurant we had gone to on the first night and had another good meal. Perhaps we were eating and drinking less and less as the weekend went on, but this time the bill was only €131 or £106 for 10 0f us. Wow! Vilnius is turning out to get cheaper the longer you stay.
