For our 2016 international trip, we chose to go to another eastern European capital, Vilnius in Lithuania. We gathered at Luton Airport to be whizzed there by Wissair, a Hungarian airline; the first time we had used them. The service was fine and we were soon landing at a very new looking airport terminal in Vilnius.
We had arranged a transfer through the hotel we were staying at and were duly met at arrivals by a man with a card. We dived into 3 taxis for the drive to the Hotel Tilto near the old part of the town. We were a little unco–ordinated and the three taxi drivers all got different tips and they charged less than we had expected. A good start to our cheap weekend.
By the time we had reached our hotel, there was no time for any sight seeing, so we changed and set off for our evening meal at the Berneliu Uzeiga (Restaurant) which was recommended by the hotel receptionist,. They had quite an extensive menu, but for some reason everything Alan chose, they did not have. It was about his fifth choice before he found something they did have. Nobody else had Alan's problem.
Chris dished out the serviettes from a dispenser, that in the UK, would have been hanging on the wall of a toilet cubicle! But the food was very good and we were surprised by our bill which was about 190€ for 10 of us including drinks – about £150.
In order to help avoid senior moments, Alan often notes down information so that he can remember it when he writes up the report. On this occasion he noted “Lankytojams” on one of the aforementioned serviettes. It was without a doubt the punch line to a very funny incident; so funny in fact that it instigated a bout of instantaneous senior moments in all present. If anyone can remember what it was, we'd be pleased to know! (Jerry reckons it's Lithuanian for visitors, if that helps.)
